Elko CAB approves heritage project extensions and supports FY26 funding packages

The Elko County Advisory Board to Manage Wildlife voted Wednesday to approve extension requests for previously awarded heritage projects and to support multiple fiscal-year 2026 funding packages recommended by department staff.
The board considered three related agenda items covering project-extension requests for previously approved heritage grants (totaling $883,193.97 in allocations reported on the agenda), funding reallocation for prior projects, and approval of Fiscal Year 2026 heritage projects. CAB members heard that many projects were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and that the Heritage Committee had already recommended extending many awards. "The heritage committee has pretty much given the thumbs up to all of these projects on all 3 agenda items," a department presenter said.
On motions from CAB members, the board approved the heritage extension requests and the proposed reallocation item. The CAB also voted to support FY26 heritage project funding of up to $2,199,756.70 as presented and supported an FY26 Habitat Research and Management funding package of up to $373,000 that included studies such as mule deer fawn survival and sage-grouse conservation work.
The CAB supported separate funding proposals drawn from specific accounts: duck-stamp projects (up to $98,000) for wetland and management-area improvements; and upland-game (game bird) stamp projects (up to $332,855) including upland game water development and sage-grouse monitoring. The CAB also approved the biannual small-game release plan for fiscal years 2026–27.
Board members said the funding proposals were generally well prioritized; one CAB member commented, "I think it was well prioritized and allocated and makes sense on postponing and extending projects." Motions to approve the items were moved, seconded and passed by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
Department staff fielded questions on specific projects including pinyon-juniper removal proposals on North Pequop and Murdock Mountain and confirmed coordination with private landowners and federal partners for larger work.
