The County Commissioners on Aug. 13 tabled a decision to upgrade the county’s phone system after staff and commissioners said they lacked needed information about how an internet-based phone system would affect the sheriff’s office and dispatch operations.
Commissioner (presiding) (speaker 2) said the county is considering switching to Internet phones and that with the county under-sheriff on vacation they had not yet received all necessary answers. "Once again, we will table it," the presiding commissioner said, apologizing that the process was taking a long time. Commissioners discussed caller-ID and voicemail behavior; one commissioner noted the problem of callers receiving a single courthouse number and then calling back to a different office because the caller ID shows the central number. The meeting record shows commissioners seeking clarity on whether the new system will let callers reach individual numbers directly or route callers first to a directory.
No formal motion to approve the phone system was made at the meeting; the item was deferred for further technical review and staff follow-up, with particular follow-up needed from the sheriff’s office to confirm dispatch and voicemail functionality.
