Pondera County approves zoning compliance for Midway Road gravel pit expansion

Pondera County commissioners voted to approve a zoning compliance request from Ramsey Offeredo to expand the footprint of an existing gravel pit on Midway Road during the July 9 regular commission meeting.
Commissioner 2 said the application came through the applicant’s engineering firm and that the work would enlarge an existing pit. “It’s the existing gravel pit out on the Midway Road, and they are just expanding the footprint of it,” Commissioner 2 said.
The commission agreed the county’s role is limited to providing local approval; it will not take on monitoring or regulatory duties. Commissioner 2 added, “Do we have an ordinance? No. But the state does for the ground open mining. They need to have the local, governmental agency okay it.”
Commissioner 2 moved to approve the zoning-compliance request and Commissioner 3 seconded the motion. After two affirmative responses, the chair declared the motion carried.
County staff will complete and send the form required to document the approval.
The discussion and vote were limited to whether the county should provide the local sign-off the state process requires; there was no county-led environmental monitoring or changes to local zoning reported during the discussion.
