The Lake Washington School District board voted Aug. 4 to adopt revised indicators for OE14, the policy that covers equitable, inclusive and safe work and learning environments. The changes include an aspirational indicator to decrease disproportionality in retention of diverse staff and new student access measures.
Superintendent Dr. Homan summarized the adopted language: OE14.2 will track decreasing disproportionality in retention of diverse staff — an indicator staff described as aspirational and complex given enrollment declines and staff reductions. For OE14.4 the board approved three separate indicators: increased access to less‑restrictive, more inclusive learning environments; students reporting access to courses that align with personal interest; and students reporting access to rigorous courses.
Directors praised engagement from the board’s student representative, James, and the broader discussion that informed the changes. Director Laliberte moved to adopt the proposed indicators, Director Choi seconded, and the board approved the revisions by voice vote.
Staff noted the adoption reflects multi‑year board conversations about retention of diverse staff and inclusionary practices; as an aspirational measure it may require careful work to align with human resources processes for reductions or reassignments.
The board’s action finalizes the second reading of the OE14 indicator changes and places these indicators into the district’s monitoring and reporting cycle.
