City moves toward local passport acceptance: State trainer scheduled, office possible by November

Santaquin staff told the City Council on July 19 they have scheduled a U.S. State Department trainer to prepare city staff to run a passport acceptance facility, with a target opening as soon as November.
Community Development staff said the city’s application and facility review is advanced enough that a federal trainer has agreed to visit and train local employees. After training, the State Department may allow the city to accept passport applications subject to final facility readiness and supplies. Staff said the city’s facility is "pretty ready" and that only some supplies and minor items remain to be completed.
If approved, the local passport acceptance service would serve city residents and the surrounding southern region; staff said currently the closest passport acceptance offices are in South Provo and Nephi. The council noted the service could be a convenience for area residents and increase foot traffic at city hall.
Staff said the timeline depends on facility readiness; some cities begin accepting passports within a few weeks after training while others take longer. The council directed staff to complete preparations and coordinate scheduling with the State Department trainer.
