Council approves conditional-use permit allowing Safeway Transportation to formalize contractor yard and outdoor bus storage

The Oak Creek Common Council on Aug. 19 adopted a resolution approving a conditional‑use permit (CUP) for Safeway Transportation Services Corporation to operate a contractor’s office, maintenance shop and contractor yard at 6925 South Sixth Street. The plan commission had recommended approval at its June 24 meeting.
Staff presentation: Christie Lane, community development director, told the council that Safeway had been operating at the multi-tenant M-1 manufacturing-zoned building and had applied to formalize its land use. The proposed site plan shows office space, a maintenance garage and designated outdoor storage areas for buses and passenger vans. Staff reported the property provides 41 identified parking spaces (above the code-required 39) and delineated the outdoor storage areas on the submitted plan.
Conditions approved by the council limit outdoor storage to a maximum of 21 buses and six passenger vans and require the parking areas and outdoor storage to be shown on and maintained as specified on the approved site plan. Council also approved hours of operation limited to 5 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Council deliberation: Members noted planning commission review and improvements proposed to parking and building upkeep. One council member remarked the permit should bring the operation into compliance and be “a vast improvement for the property.”
Action: The council adopted resolution 12606-081925 approving the conditional‑use permit; the motion and second were made on the record and the roll call vote recorded multiple aye votes leading to adoption.
Implementation and oversight: The resolution requires Safeway to maintain the limits and conditions approved by the council. If the council were to find noncompliance in the future, it would have remedies under the code to pursue enforcement or revoke the CUP. For now, staff will monitor continued compliance with the approved site plan and hours.
