The Eagle Pass City Council on June 24 approved a resolution directing the city manager to develop a comprehensive senior-wellness and support program that builds on existing library-led activities and community partnerships.
Library staff presented the program model: weekly classes (arts and crafts, sewing/knitting) hosted at the San Luis Center, a community garden partnership that produced recipes for a senior-led cookbook aimed at blood-pressure and diabetes management, and smartphone classes to enhance digital literacy. Staff also described bingo-size exercise sessions and routine health checks such as blood-pressure and glucose screenings during class sessions.
"Our program has already demonstrated that senior wellness is achievable through creativity, care, and connection," the library presenter said, and staff outlined plans to expand transportation support and coordinate mobile health screenings (Prospera Mobile) and other partner services to reach homebound seniors and nursing-home residents.
Council approved the resolution unanimously and suggested closer coordination with the city's support hub and public-health coalition to schedule mobile screenings and outreach to nursing homes. Staff said they will pursue interagency collaboration and expand public outreach to increase participation.
