Everman Animal Services reports higher adoptions and record June intake of cats; live-release rate climbs to 84%

At the July 22 meeting the city's animal-services representative reported June intake and outcome statistics to the Everman City Council. Staff said the shelter took in 62 dogs and 32 cats in June; staff noted the cat intake was the highest since the department began keeping the data because of many newborn kittens and feral-cat intakes. For outcomes, staff reported 55 animals were transferred to rescues and 16 adoptions occurred during June. The representative said the shelter held events using a new mobile adoption unit that produced nine adoptions across several locations (two events in Everman and others in Mansfield and Burleson). The shelter's live-release rate for June was 84% overall, 87% for dogs and 69% for cats; staff attributed the lower cat live-release rate to newborn, sick or injured kittens that could not be returned to the street. Council members asked clarifying questions about event statistics ("taken" to events vs. "adopted") and about licensing or jurisdictional breakdowns; staff replied that the "taken" number represented how many animals were brought to an event and that most customers served outside the city were residential. The animal-services representative credited staff (named Mindy in the meeting) for the outcomes and said the department fielded 121 ACO calls and 1,686 phone calls in June.
