Council discussion followed a June 5 vote to indefinitely postpone an amendment that would have fully funded construction. Staff said termination would formally end the project in its current form and allow the MDD to release the previously-allocated $1,200,000 for other projects. Staff emphasized that terminating the agreement does not prevent either the city or the MDD from pursuing a similar project in the future and said any new funding or an amended application would require a separate process.
City staff and the mayor praised staff work on design and procurement for the project and said the professional work positions the city well if it decides to revisit a civic center in the future. The council approved the termination resolution by voice vote.
