City approves application for state and local cybersecurity grant to fund network upgrades

The Fair Oaks Ranch City Council on June 19 approved a resolution authorizing submission of an application for the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program (SLCGP) to replace end-of-life network devices and increase bandwidth in City Hall and the police department.
IT Manager Brian Lejeune told council the city submitted an application on Feb. 28 for a $99,434 project that, if awarded, would be funded 80% by the grant and 20% by the city as a required match. Lejeune said recurring support costs would increase slightly but the work would reduce the risk of equipment failure and simplify maintenance of the city’s network. He said the project would use the Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) cooperative to meet competitive procurement requirements. The work will support implementation steps in the IT master plan, which staff said will come before council in a future meeting.
Council asked whether the city would fund the full project if the grant is not awarded; Lejeune said staff would recommend funding the project using city resources if necessary. He also noted the city had been an award recipient previously and expressed confidence the application met eligibility and program requirements.
The council approved the resolution by voice vote and authorized the city manager to execute documents required for grant submission and acceptance if the award is made. Staff said any award would be contingent on the council including the local match in the FY 2025–26 budget.
