City staff reported progress on capital improvement projects at the July 14 council meeting while residents urged council not to let other projects fall behind amid major redevelopment efforts.
Public Works staff said the 12-inch waterline project (NASA 1) is approximately 85% complete and that the city will have an opening bid next Tuesday for the street project; staff expects to award the street-repair contract in August. Staff also said the city has fenced a staging area on Space Park near Methodist property to contain materials and improve neighborhood appearance.
In public comment, resident Pete Saroka asked council to return the city-owned waterfront lot on Daven Lane to active planning and suggested it be developed for public use, such as an educational garden or water-harvesting demonstration; Saroka also urged the city to complete road-repaving projects that he said had slipped behind schedule in the capital improvement program.
Staff acknowledged the delay on some pavement bids and said staff had been adjusting schedules to avoid starting work too close to hurricane season. Staff provided specific repair counts for recent water fixes: two taps installed and two leak repairs cited during the Public Works report; the parts crew also responded to Lights and sprinkler repairs after July 4 events.
No formal procurement decisions on the street repaving were made at the meeting; staff said they would proceed with the bid opening and return with contract award recommendations in August.
