Nassau Bay reports three water main leaks; wells, crews limited service interruption as NASA waterline project continues

City officials told the Nassau Bay City Council on Aug. 11 that three leaks occurred on the citys older water system and that backups kicked in to maintain service, and they provided an update on the NASA waterline construction that has affected Point Lookout.
"It's been extremely hot. We've seen 3 water leaks on our old system water system," the city manager said, describing the events as a test of the city's backup wells and operators. "The wells were intended exactly to do, what, they were designed to do, in the event of a, water leak on the main supply system. The wells kicked in, so we had a couple weeks dealing with that."
Public Works later gave location details for the leaks and other recent maintenance: crews responded to water leaks at 18743 Martinique, 18226 Bal Harbour and 1622 Saxony Lane; crews also changed out meter boxes throughout the city and jetted about 3,200 feet of sanitary sewer along Upper Bay, San Sebastian and Surf Court to improve flow.
On the NASA waterline project, staff said work had been postponed earlier because emergency repairs took priority but that crews expect to complete remaining tasks this week, with concrete pours planned for next week at Point Lookout. "We have a couple of [items] scheduled for this week, and then, hopefully, we can get the concrete poured next week," a staff member said.
The city manager praised utility operators for round-the-clock adjustments and said crews were preparing a nine-area street project beginning next month. No motion or vote accompanied the report; the council received the update for information and ongoing monitoring.
