Staff said the interlocal agreement had been discussed for several months and that the annual county payment had been updated to $30,000. The county requested language clarifying that it would pay euthanasia costs for county dogs but not veterinary treatment bills for county animals; staff said that change would make the city responsible for routine vet bills for county animals brought to city facilities under the new wording.
The city manager said the city's costs for county animals had been modest in the first year of the arrangement — roughly $500 in bills over the prior year — and staff expected costs to remain controlled because the city maintains limited kennel capacity and retains observation space. Commissioners moved to approve the interlocal and authorized the city manager to execute the agreement.
The meeting also included a brief introduction of the city's animal control officer, Steve Hennings. The police chief and city manager praised Hennings for stepping into the role, noting increased enforcement activity and an upcoming animal-control training session the city will host.
