Commission approves gradual speed-limit reductions on 20 Third Street to match developing corridor

The McAllen City Commission approved an ordinance implementing stepwise reductions to posted speeds on 20 Third Street from State Highway 107 to Dove Avenue, following a traffic study and a recommendation from the Traffic Advisory Board.
A traffic operations representative told the commission the route’s posted limits had not changed since the roadway was constructed and that new residential and commercial development — plus three new signals at 20 Third and Sprague, Freddie and Oxford — supported lowering speeds in stages from 55 to 50, then 45 and finally 40 miles per hour as the corridor approaches the city core. Staff said the request came from the Texas Department of Transportation and was supported by accident and speed survey data for 2024.
Commissioners noted the reduction aligned with the city’s Vision Zero safety goals to reduce crash severity. Staff explained that once the ordinance is adopted the city will notify TxDOT, which will install new signs; traffic enforcement will be adjusted so drivers have time to comply.
