Council unanimously approves two zoning changes and annexation for residential tract

The City Council on Aug. 26 held consolidated public hearings and approved two zoning changes and an annexation ordinance.
Planning Director Kristen Sager summarized the two zone cases. Zone case 11-90D (District 3) changed a property north of 50th Street east of Quaker from Neighborhood Commercial to Heavy Commercial; staff and the Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval and the council voted unanimously after a public speaker (property lessee Ricky Plunkett) spoke in favor. Four notices of opposition to the rezoning were recorded in the staff packet; the council’s action followed the public hearing and a unanimous Planning and Zoning recommendation.
Zone case 35-31 (District 4) reclassified property north of 100th and west of Slide from low-density single-family (SF-2) to Heavy Commercial; staff said notifications produced no responses and the commission recommended unanimous approval. The council approved that rezoning unanimously.
On annexation (agenda item 7.3), the council approved second reading of an ordinance to annex approximately 8.82 acres adjacent to the southwestern city limits (south of 140 Sixth Street, adjacent to and west of Frankfort Avenue). The council voted to approve the second reading unanimously and forewent an extra staff briefing because the item was on second reading.
All three actions (two zoning changes and the annexation ordinance) passed on unanimous voice votes recorded in the transcript.
