Anastasia Sanchez, a resident of Toppenish, told the Yakima County commissioners during public comment on Aug. 5 that local leaders plan to run a levy next spring to fund repairs and operation of the Toppenish community pool.
Sanchez said the group tried "really hard to save that pool" this year but repairs and timing prevented reopening, so they plan to place a levy on the February ballot. She asked the commissioners to "allow us to run it like if it's part of the school district so that we can include all the county kids and the city," arguing the pool serves neighboring communities without pools and provides recreation and summer jobs.
A commissioner thanked Sanchez, said the board does not typically engage in back-and-forth during public comment but offered a business card and to continue the conversation offline.
Ending: Commissioners did not take action during the meeting; staff indicated they would follow up with Sanchez outside the public meeting to discuss options and next steps.
