Council nominates two firms for Texas enterprise-zone designations, citing job creation and investment

The City Council on Aug. 26 voted to nominate two companies for state enterprise-zone sales-and-use-tax rebate designations, a competitive process administered by the Texas Governor’s Office of Economic Development and Tourism.
Brianna Brown summarized the two nominations. McLean Company Inc., which operates a distribution center in Lubbock, asked for a designation for a $12.3 million investment in equipment and facility upgrades and proposed to create 10 new jobs while retaining about 287 existing employees. Brown said the project is inside a state-designated enterprise zone; that status reduces certain hiring thresholds.
Tyler Technologies Inc. requested a half-designation for a $3 million property investment (business personal property) to modernize network/technology infrastructure at its headquarters and proposed to create 10 new jobs while retaining roughly 240 existing employees. Brown noted Tyler’s request will consume 0.5 of the city’s available designations for the biennium.
Brown explained the city’s role is a local nomination only; the state makes final designation decisions and awards up to nine designations every two years. The council unanimously approved the nominations and will have remaining nomination capacity for future rounds.
