Siskiyou County staff issued a press release and a formal letter to Rep. Doug LaMalfa urging federal leadership on gray wolf management and announcing a California Department of Fish and Wildlife pilot program to reduce wolf attacks on livestock.

Joanne Johnson, project coordinator for the county administration office, told the board the press release announces a new pilot in which experienced state staff will support producers in high-loss areas. Johnson said the board supports the state's effort but emphasized 'ongoing concerns about livestock degradation.'

Johnson said the county also sent a formal letter to Rep. LaMalfa requesting his leadership in advancing federal action on gray wolf management. Both the press release and the letter were posted on the county's website, Johnson said.

No formal policy or funding action was adopted by the board during the discussion; staff presented the publications for board information and public record.

The county did not describe any immediate county-funded program tied to the pilot; Johnson said the announcements described state-led support in high-loss areas and that the county's statement was intended to urge federal engagement on the issue.
