Shasta County Fire reports rising call volume, strong volunteer engagement in annual briefing

Fire Chief Sean O’Hara presented the Shasta County Fire annual report, which the board received and approved. The chief reported continued high call volume: agency dispatch centers processed more than 58,000 telephone calls and county partners responded to roughly 14,800 incidents countywide during the last fiscal year. Fire Prevention Bureau staff handled numerous investigations and enforcement activities; burglary and arson investigation work remains active.
O’Hara and staff noted a rebound and strengthening of the volunteer firefighting force since the post‑COVID period. The department has introduced performance and participation thresholds for paid‑call firefighters (PCFs) and has seen volunteer response rates and attendance rise as a result. The chief also emphasized interagency resource sharing: county units both support and receive assistance from neighboring jurisdictions and the state on large incidents.
Supervisors thanked the department and volunteers and approved the written annual report by motion.
