Board approves side letter expanding bilingual pay eligibility for probation officers

Cariani, Assistant Personnel Director, told the Board on Aug. 19 that a side letter had been negotiated with the Inyo County Probation Peace Officers Association to clarify bilingual pay eligibility and to remove a cap.
Cariani said current memorandum language referenced probation officers and then a bilingual provision that could be read to limit eligibility; the side letter clarifies that bilingual pay under special assignment is available to any member of the represented unit who uses that skill. The side letter also removes a prior cap limiting bilingual pay to four members; the probation chief requested the change to allow equitable compensation for bilingual duties across the unit.
Supervisors voted to approve the side letter. Staff said one remaining bargaining unit (Law Enforcement Administrators Association) remains in negotiations following this agreement.
