The Alma City Commission approved a $94,081.50 contract with Rightway Asphalt Paving Inc. to perform asphalt wedging and large patches on multiple local and major streets.
Public services staff explained the wedging technique removes large failed sections, allows proper base preparation, and then permits a later seal coat or chip seal to extend the surface life. The work this fiscal year will focus on Fairlane Drive and sections of Park Street between the railroad tracks and Mechanics Street; a major-street patch will address a significant depression in front of J & J’s using Act 51 major-street funding.
Staff said the city budgeted roughly $60,000 for local street wedging this year and planned a conservative spending target of $50,000–$53,000 to allow for overages. The contract is intended to supplement city crews, which lack equipment for the largest patches. Commission discussion noted some streets — including Grafton on the south side — may require larger future projects beyond wedging and are candidates for next street millage funds.
The commission approved the contract by voice vote. Staff said they will monitor performance and consider overlays or seal coats in subsequent years based on results and available funds.
