A city staff member told the Alma City governing body that the city’s utility meter replacement program is nearing completion, with the staff report showing 3,100 commercial, residential and industrial meters in scope and, as of last Friday, 51 meters remaining to be replaced.
Staff said the number has since fallen below 50 after the city applied a $100 noncompliance fee to accounts for customers who had not arranged meter access. That fee prompted a handful of calls from residents arranging access, staff said. The staff update also said technicians identified seven meters that were not functioning; those meters will need brand‑new replacements.
Officials described the new metering system as a major operational improvement: staff said the city can now read all meters within three to four hours, enabling quicker detection of leaks and faster customer outreach. The staff presentation stressed both the operational benefits and that a small number of problematic meters require further work.
No formal action was taken; the governing body received the report by motion. Staff thanked residents for cooperating during the program and said they expect to finish the changeout soon.
