The Alma City Commission approved a $103,261.68 purchase from Medler Electric for 24 LED post lights and poles to replace aging sodium fixtures along Superior Street and adjacent blocks.
City staff said the work will replace 1970s-era sodium lights along Superior from Woodworth to Gratiot and Gratiot to Pineapple, completing substantial segments of the downtown lighting upgrade. The purchase will be supported by additional funds from the Local Community Stabilization Act. Commissioners approved a related FY25 budget amendment to increase the street lighting expenditure budget and matching intergovernmental revenue for the replacement work.
City staff told the commission the replacements are intended as a capital investment rather than using one-time operational funds. The commission approved the purchase and the budget amendment by voice votes.
Staff said remaining downtown lighting work (west of State Street and other blocks previously approved) will be scheduled in subsequent actions as funds allow.
