Council authorizes plans for Lexington Avenue water main after five breaks

Eastpointe’s council voted to authorize AEW Engineering to prepare plans, specifications and inspection services for a water main replacement on Lexington Avenue from 9 Mile Road to Stevens Drive after recent, repeated breaks on the line.
The motion to approve the AEW proposal passed unanimously. Council members said the existing main dates to 1954 and that the Department of Public Works has recorded multiple failures in recent months; a DPW speaker reported "in the last 3 months, we've had 5 water main breaks over there." Council discussed shifting the new main to the sidewalk side to reduce future roadside disturbances and agreed to bundle the Lexington work with a separate 9 Mile water main bid to seek better pricing.
Council members noted this will be an additional project likely to use Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) resources, meaning the city will need to add funding accordingly. The council also discussed that replacing an aging main before street reconstruction avoids repaving over older utilities.
The vote was recorded as unanimous: Council member Baker—yes; Council member Curley—yes; Council member Mishadlick—yes; Council member DeMonaco—yes; Mayor Kleinfeld—yes. Staff said AEW will prepare the bid documents and inspection plan so the city can advance procurement.
No construction contract was awarded at the meeting; the action authorized engineering design, specifications and inspection work so the city can solicit construction bids.
