Commission approves request to send Sounds of Kingman mural proposal for Metcalfe Park to council

The Parks, Aquatics, Recreation and Trails Commission voted May 21 to send a proposal from Sounds of Kingman to the City Council seeking approval for a mural on the restroom building at Metcalfe Park.
Robin Gordon, chair of Sounds of Kingman, told the commission, "This is the second draft of this mural." Gordon said the group plans to pay all expenses for the project and recommended placing the mural on the side of the restroom building that faces Grandview so people entering town and traveling toward the high school would see it.
Artist Monica Galica described the expected timetable and weather-related constraints: "It will take about 2 weeks, depending on when it is to be started. If it gets approved, like, by the summertime, I'll have to go, like, in the morning, you know, to avoid the heat and stuff. And I'm only human, so it'll take, like, just a couple days, and I'll be doing it by myself mostly." Gordon and Galica said they will apply a primer and a UV-protective topcoat to make the mural more durable and easier to clean of graffiti.
Commissioners asked technical questions about protective coatings, primer, and ongoing maintenance; Gordon said Sounds of Kingman would pay for periodic refreshes if the mural needs touching up. Gordon also said the final design will include the group name and the artist credit.
A motion to forward the mural request to City Council for approval passed by voice vote. The commission did not specify a mover or record a roll-call vote in the meeting minutes.
If City Council approves the request, Galica and Sounds of Kingman indicated they would schedule work to avoid summer heat and to aim for a roughly two-week installation window.
