A proposal to amend Chapter 10.60 of the Lansing Codified Ordinances to establish the city as the provider of all curbside solid‑waste collection was referred to the Public Safety committee on Aug. 11. Vice President Carter moved that referral; the motion passed.

Todd Granger, representing the Granger family of companies and speaking to council, objected to the proposed change and urged council to “pause and reconsider the proposed amendment to chapter 10 60.” Granger noted his company’s long operational history in the city and argued that allowing residents to choose haulers fosters competition, keeps service high and rates affordable. “This proposed amendment would eliminate that choice, forcing them to use services that may cost them more,” he said.

Council did not take final action on the ordinance at the Aug. 11 meeting; instead the item was assigned to Public Safety for further consideration. The proposed change was included among several referrals the council directed to committees that evening.
