Sterling Heights to be featured in EGLE webinar on reforestation and open‑space preservation

Sterling Heights — City Manager Mark Vanderpool told the council the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) will host a Catalyst Communities webinar on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 11 a.m. that will feature Sterling Heights’ reforestation and open‑space preservation work funded by the 2024 Pathways to Play and Preservation millage.
Vanderpool said Sustainability Planner Ryan Fox will lead the webinar presentation and will showcase the city’s large‑scale tree‑planting program aimed at replacing trees lost to emerald ash borer and Dutch elm disease; Vanderpool said the city has removed about 12,000 diseased trees over the years. He said the webinar will also highlight efforts to preserve undeveloped land for future generations and that residents and council members are invited to attend.
Vanderpool framed the webinar as an opportunity to show how local voter support for the millage is financing environmental projects in Sterling Heights and said the city will continue to publicize the event to residents.
