Livonia City Council on Aug. 11 authorized payment for emergency repairs to a rented Vactor truck used by the Department of Public Works and approved two months' lease invoices, citing the need to keep equipment available for excavation work on lead‑service investigations. Don Roraf, director of the Department of Public Works, told council the leased vehicle was damaged while being used for hydro‑excavation and sewer work and required immediate repair. He asked the council to approve repairs totaling $50,601.97 and an additional $28,000 to cover two months of lease invoices.
"We're here before you tonight to pay for an emergency repair on a rented Vactor that was damaged during our use in excavating for exploratory for lead services," Roraf said. He said the city repaired the truck and is processing a claim with MMRMA (Michigan Municipal Risk Management Authority), but had not yet received a determination from insurance.
Council members said they understood the urgency because the leased equipment is on the clock and needed return to service. Councilwoman Toye offered approval on consent. The council approved the payments from budgeted funds at the study session; the meeting did not record a roll‑call vote.
Staff indicated the city will continue pursuing insurance reimbursement with MMRMA and will report back to council when the claim is resolved.
