At the Aug. 4 Hancock County Board of Supervisors meeting, a utility representative updated supervisors on multiple projects, saying Coastal Electric has reviewed plans and will require specific in-place protections before it allows new solar equipment to be energized, and that the NASA sewer project—previously scheduled to be online in May 2025—has been delayed.
David Patel, speaking for the utility, said Coastal Electric "has reviewed the plans" and will require measures in place "before it allows to turn it on" so that the new equipment can shut off without backfeeding lines and affecting crews working on distribution circuits. Patel also reported a "minor issue" during installation at the South Plant: "Some moisture got into the control after the automatic transfer switch." He said that, barring other issues, systems are expected to be online "probably, September, all systems will be ongoing."
Patel and board members discussed the NASA Sewer Project timeline; Patel said the sewer project had been scheduled to be online in May 2025 but that work was delayed. He said revenue generated by the project and savings from solar at treatment plants are expected to help the utility's finances when the projects are fully operational. The utility also reported ongoing collection and overflow-minimization work near the South jail.
No formal board action was taken; the item was presented as an operational update and staff said they would continue to monitor installation issues and coordinate required inspections with Coastal Electric before energization.
