The Clayton County Board of Supervisors voted to approve an additional $35 payment for election commissioners on election day, a request the commissioners said is authorized by recent state legislation.
Stella Greenwood, an election commissioner from District 1, told the board that election officials are elected and not represented by the circuit clerk, and that the Secretary of State requires each commissioner to have a ballot scanner.
"We are elected officials and we are not represented by the circuit clerk. We work with, not for," Greenwood said. "The Secretary of State requires that each one of us have a scanner. We've'd like to be recognized for getting our own budget so that we can get equipment and stuff that we need."
Greenwood also asked the board to recognize an effective Senate bill (identified in the record as "Senate Bill 2657") that allows the board discretion to approve the additional $35. The motion to approve the $35 stipend passed on a voice vote with supervisors voting in favor and no recorded negative votes on the motion.
What the board did: approved an additional $35 election‑day payment to election commissioners for the current election cycle and directed staff to note the request for separate budget recognition for the commissioners and equipment needs.
What remains: commissioners asked the board formally to allocate a line item or separate budget so they can purchase required scanners and other election equipment; supervisors requested follow‑up documentation and staff estimates.
