The Apache Junction Water District board voted unanimously July 15 to buy four fleet vehicles in an amount not to exceed $225,000 using Arizona cooperative contracts. The purchase covers two 3/4-ton trucks with service bodies, one 1,500 crew cab for a superintendent and one 4x4 Chevrolet Colorado for inspections on dirt roads.
District staff said the replacements are part of a routine fleet rotation to retire vehicles older than seven years or with over 100,000 miles and to reduce maintenance and emergency-failure risk. Mike, the district director, said the district uses state cooperative contracts CTR059320 and CTR069474 to acquire the vehicles and that prior practice has reduced major engine and transmission failures.
Board members asked about resale options for retired vehicles and whether selling through the city auction yields the best return. Fleet manager Brian Gleave was named during discussion as the contact who can provide sales history; staff reported previous auction proceeds to the district were about $15,000–$17,000 for vehicles that were older (10–12 years). Trustees asked staff to investigate alternate disposal routes such as Kelly Blue Book wholesale or other government-sale channels and to report back.
A motion to purchase one replacement 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab, two replacement 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD regular cab trucks and one new 2025 Chevrolet Colorado crew cab 4x4 from Midway Chevrolet under the listed cooperative contracts for up to $225,000 passed by unanimous roll call.
Staff said the replacements align with projected growth in district customers — from roughly 4,500 customers a few years ago to about 7,500–8,000 service connections now — and that the district plans modest, staged hiring and fleet expansion tied to development.
