Lieutenant Painter of the Apache Junction Police Department told the council on July 14 that the department applied for and was awarded $20,000 from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and the DUI Abatement Council to reimburse overtime dedicated to DUI enforcement.

Painter said the department applies for these grants annually and has a history of receiving them. He told council the grant is reimbursable and staff is requesting authorization to begin using the awarded funds. Council members asked when the item would appear on the council agenda; staff said it would be on the consent agenda the next day.

No council questions or objections were recorded during the work session. The grant award and staff’s request to accept and spend the funds will be placed on the consent calendar for the next regular council meeting.
