Springdale Airport staff asked commissioners on June 19 for informal approval to perform short, temporary closures to support a 5K, a car show and a proposed short car-versus-plane demonstration, and outlined safety measures and test runs.
Daniel, a staff member, said organizers obtained prior approval from the commission last month and are coordinating with airport staff and the tower. "The 5 k, basically, where I'm at is it's up to the airport manager or the director to say you may use the runway. I will close it for this time to this time, and the the the note will be issued and then we can do that for the car show," Daniel said. He said the plan for the car-versus-plane run may not require a full runway closure but would likely need "a temporary closure of Taxiway Alpha for about 15 minutes" and brief runway holds to stage the run.
Daniel said he would like two 15-minute closures for test runs earlier in the day, then a short demonstration near the end of the show: "I'd like to do I I again, aim for 04:00, or if I see just a dead period, on Saturday during the middle of the day," and "the show starts at 6. We wanna do the race at 7 to 07:15." He described safety controls: drivers will sign a form agreeing not to perform burnouts, the event will use rolling starts and staff or employees will escort vehicles "so that we can do the escorting of these vehicles. No matter where they are at or where they are coming from they are escorted by me. The only time they are not is when they are moving, against the aircraft." Daniel said he has been coordinating with local media partner Spector NWA, which has been accommodating.
Commissioners asked for additional input and safety ideas before finalizing plans. Daniel framed the proposals as operational requests rather than formal agenda items; no formal closure approvals or motions appear in the transcript. He also reported outreach to tower manager Mike Coff and to James for approvals and logistics.
Discussion only: staff sought preliminary support and guidance; any formal temporary closure or NOTAM (notice to airmen) would follow standard airport and FAA notification processes.
