The council approved two right‑of‑way abandonments on July 15 that staff said were needed to clear property titles and allow adjacent development. Derek Sherr, planner in the city’s development services department, presented both items.
West Honeycutt Avenue: Sherr described case ABDN24‑010 as a request to abandon an approximately 22‑foot‑wide portion of right‑of‑way on the northern half of West Honeycutt Avenue, east of North John Wayne Parkway. He said the abandoned portion "will be acquired by the adjacent property owner without compensation." Council member Gettle moved to approve Resolution 25‑26; Council member Noor seconded. The motion carried with the council voting aye.
West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard: Sherr presented case ABDN25‑001, a request to abandon a roughly 371‑foot length of right‑of‑way between North Greythorn Drive and West Boland Road adjacent to the Copper Sky Field House. The staff report said the abandoned strip will be absorbed by the parcel where the Copper Sky field house extension will sit and converted to pervious (DG) parking. Council member Marsh moved to approve Resolution 25‑27, with Vice Mayor Wade seconding; the council voted to approve the abandonment.
Staff findings and notice: For both requests, Sherr said notice letters were mailed to local utilities on June 26, signs were posted and no public comments had been received to the staff cutoff. He recommended approval in both cases, and the council adopted the resolutions subject to the conditions set forth in staff memos and the council action.
Outcomes: Both abandonments were approved by motion and vote and will be processed per the conditions in the staff reports and the referenced resolutions. The Honeycutt abandonment transfers the strip to the adjoining property owner without compensation; the MLK abandonment will be used by the city/owner for parking related to Copper Sky expansion.
Context: Right‑of‑way abandonments are routine administrative actions when a roadway segment is no longer needed for public travel or when built improvements make an extra strip redundant; in this case staff said the Honeycutt strip was extraneous for drainage and roadway configuration and the MLK strip will be repurposed for community recreation parking.
