Board members used the "future discussion items" portion of the July 28 meeting to request follow-up on several operational topics. Board member Ashley Pasquale asked for a discussion on ways to "improve or grow the summer camp," noting public perceptions around enrollment and hoping to broaden access. The motion to add the item was seconded and will appear on a future agenda.
Volunteer support and policing volunteers: Board member Dale McCormick offered to recruit retired police officers to provide volunteer support at events and described them as "retired police officers, but they also are very community oriented." McCormick suggested volunteers could assist at events such as the Splash Bash and Special Olympics. Director Rivera responded that the department welcomes volunteers and offered to provide a contact for the program coordinator so McCormick could follow up.
Marketing and social media: Board members asked for a discussion on whether the Parks and Recreation Department could operate dedicated social-media accounts separate from broader city accounts to improve targeted outreach. Members argued improved marketing could increase awareness of events and enrollment. Rivera acknowledged the marketing gaps and said staff are working to improve outreach.
Meeting schedule and availability: Staff announced future meeting dates for the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board as Aug. 25 and Sept. 22, 2025, but also noted the director and staff will be at a state conference and Sept. 22 may need to be canceled if a replacement date cannot be found.
Ending: The board added the suggested items to future agendas and asked staff to return with more detailed proposals on summer-camp enrollment processes, social-media options, volunteer coordination and alternative meeting scheduling.
