The sheriff said Polk County had recently asked Dunn County to house one inmate, and the county is seeking to sustain or grow that revenue stream.
As part of the budget request, the sheriff proposed adding a recreation deputy position focused on boat, snowmobile and UTV patrol. The sheriff said the position is expected to be reimbursed at about 60% by the state and that equipment purchases could be repaid over time; the sheriff has requested the recreation deputy for multiple years.
The sheriff also noted operational budget changes: towing costs were increased (the towing line item was doubled) and some supply and service lines were consolidated into office supplies while geomedical and food expenses rose. The department also expects a behavioral health officer/case manager and an administrative assistant to start Sept. 2.
Committee members asked why the recreation deputy must be a dedicated role; the sheriff explained the county lacks a full‑time dedicated officer for recreational enforcement and relying on overtime is more expensive because the county is reimbursed only at straight time rates. No formal vote occurred on the budget during the committee update; the sheriff’s request and revenue adjustments will be considered as part of the county budgeting process.
