City staff and the Edinburg Police Department told the City Council on July 15 they are preparing for the 29th annual National Night Out event in Edinburg on Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Edinburg Promenade Park and Amphitheater, 201 W. McIntyre.
City Manager Myra Ayala introduced the presentation and asked Chief Jaime Ayala to provide details. Chief Jaime Ayala said the department expects the event to be larger than in past years and that several community‑oriented policing officers and volunteers are planning pre‑event block parties and outreach programs throughout July.
Officer Benedict, assigned to the department’s community division, said organizers expect free carnival rides, a car show, law‑enforcement equipment displays, dance and band performances, mariachis and guest appearances, including a scheduled appearance by Bobby Pulido. The department also listed corporate sponsors expected to participate including Walmart, Countrywide, Starbucks, ADT, AT&T and 7‑Eleven. Organizers said free backpacks and school‑supply giveaways will be available while supplies last; food vendors may charge for food.
The city encouraged residents to attend and said the department will continue community outreach events, including “Cops with a Cop” and “Movies with a Cop,” in the lead‑up to the Aug. 5 celebration.
