ADCO/Bertec brings SB 1383 school activity packet to Apple Valley classrooms

ADCO Disposal (Bertec) presented a school activity packet to the Apple Valley Town Council designed to teach young students about organics recycling and proper waste sorting under California’s short-lived climate pollutant requirements (SB 1383). The packet is aimed at transitional kindergarten through second grade and includes a teacher lesson plan, activity sheets, posters, a children’s book and QR links to online videos and resources.
Pam (presenting staff) introduced Michael Heffman of ADCO, who described the packet’s components and the company’s plan to work with the local school district’s superintendent and director of curriculum to distribute the materials to classrooms and libraries. Heffman said the packet revolves around three container characters — black for trash, blue for recycling and green for organics — and includes classroom-ready posters and activity sheets to reduce contamination and teach how organics are processed at materials-recovery facilities.
Councilmember Bishop and other council members raised concerns about contamination in the green organics barrels and noted that education of adults as well as students will be necessary to reduce mixing of trash into organics containers. Heffman agreed that contamination is a major problem and said outreach to teachers and parents is an explicit objective of the rollout.
ADCO said the packet will be rolled out this fall across jurisdictions it serves in Southern California, not only in Apple Valley. There was no town action requested; the presentation was informational and the council praised the education approach.
