The Tillamook County Board of Commissioners authorized a grant agreement with Travel Oregon totaling $150,000 on June 25 to fund engineering and design work for traffic rerouting at Barview Jetty Campground.
Parks Director Dan Kysbark told commissioners the project grew out of repeated traffic congestion at the campground entrance that caused long backups onto Highway 101 and strained staff. Kysbark said temporary signage and earlier attempts to procure design services were insufficient; after an unsuccessful RFP and a sole‑source engagement, the county is working with a local design‑and‑build firm that expects to deliver a redesign for under $100,000. The Travel Oregon grant will help cover engineering and design so the county can leverage its existing funds.
Kysbark said the county has until November 2026 to complete the grant‑funded work but staff expect to finish much sooner. Commissioners praised the parks staff’s grant‑seeking efforts and described Barview Jetty as a key tourism draw for the county. “We’re grateful that Travel Oregon wants to invest in this project,” one commissioner said. Another commissioner called Barview Jetty the county’s “flagship campground.”
The board voted unanimously to approve the grant agreement and directed staff to continue contract work and bring back construction proposals as needed. The county indicated it will seek to combine the Travel Oregon funds with other pending grants, including an application with the Marine Board, to complete both the design and subsequent construction phases.
