County to accept $170,062 ODF subaward for yard-debris program to reduce wildfire risk

Tillamook County commissioners approved acceptance of a $170,062 subaward from the Oregon Department of Forestry on June 11 to continue a yard-debris program that offers free disposal of acceptable woody material to landowners creating defensible space.
Public Works Director Chris Leidy told the board the county is a subrecipient to an Oregon Department of Forestry grant from the U.S. Forest Service. The funds cover collection and chipping of tree limbs, branches, shrubs, leaves and similar woody debris at county transfer stations; the processed material is ground into mulch for reuse.
Leidy said the program does not accept stumps, household trash, plastic bags or sod with dirt. Participating residents pick up a voucher at designated county locations (public works yard, Manzanita and Pacific City) and present it at transfer stations (Tillamook transfer station excluded for on-site voucher issuance because of traffic concerns).
Commissioners described the program as popular and noted it reduces the likelihood that yard waste is illegally dumped in forests, where cleanup is much more costly. A motion to approve the subaward agreement carried without discussion.
