Commission approves asphalt procurement and grader purchase for county road operations

The Tillamook County Board of Commissioners approved two public‑works procurement actions on May 21: a contract for asphalt purchases with Bayview Asphalt Inc. of Gearhart and a contract with Pape Machinery Inc. to buy a 2018 John Deere 770G motor grader.
Public Works Director Chris Laney said the county manages 368 miles of roads, 76 miles of which are gravel, and that the grader purchase replaces a 1987 unit the county has kept in service for decades. The used grader under contract carries 1,723 hours and a purchase price of $228,889; Laney noted a new machine would cost around $600,000. The board approved the asphalt procurement contract to allow the county to purchase materials for road and driveway paving projects this season.
Commissioners commented that getting many years of service from heavy equipment and re‑investing in fleet replacements is an expected public‑works practice. Both procurement actions passed by voice vote.
