Traveling Vietnam memorial to stop in Independence; organizers plan escort through Dallas
The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will be escorted into Independence on Sept. 16, assembled at Independence Sports Park on Sept. 17 and remain on display with a welcome-home ceremony scheduled for Sept. 18, organizers told the Dallas City Council on Aug. 4. The exhibit will be open 24 hours a day while on site, the organizers said.

Organizers said the display is maintained by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and was selected from 140 applicants; Independence is one of 30 selected stops this year and the only scheduled stop in Oregon, Billy Wisenat, a veteran and cochair of the local hosting committee, told council members. The mobile exhibit includes a trailer that converts into an education center with screens showing hometown veterans and other commemorative materials.

Wisenat described the committee as 22 people that include Vietnam and Vietnam-era veterans and local educators. He said the committee is producing a commemorative coin and coordinating outreach to veterans’ families; he described personal efforts to contact the family of a fallen comrade to deliver a coin.

City staff and Wisenat told council members that Dallas Police Department staff will help escort the trailer as it moves through Dallas. City officials said they will publish route and timing details on the city website and social media when available.

“Wallfields is a 3 quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC,” Wisenat said, describing the exhibit’s size and the education materials that accompany it.

Organizers asked the council for logistical support and said they expect to provide broad community access to the exhibit while it is in Independence. Council members and staff said they would include the event in the city newsletter and on the city website.

The project’s local hosts said they will continue to finalize timing and route details and will share those publicly as they are confirmed.
