Pacific declares retired K-9 vehicle surplus, board approves sale

Mayor Philly and Police Chief Klinger described the vehicle as a 2023 Durango outfitted with sirens, lights, a temperature alarm system for the K-9 unit and an aluminum kennel kit. Chief Klinger told the board the vehicle is configured for patrol use and would not be efficient for animal-control duties without significant interior work: "To get that towards a functioning patrol car, you basically have to gut the interior of that vehicle. And that just wouldn't be cost effective," he said.
The motion to declare the vehicle surplus was made by Alderman Kelly, seconded by Alderman Madrigal and approved by voice vote with no opposition.
Why it matters: The city can recover proceeds from selling specialized equipment it no longer needs; the board confirmed the vehicle is not well suited for reassignment to animal control and will be sold rather than converted.
What’s next: Staff will process the vehicle as surplus property and proceed with sale to the interested municipality that expressed interest; proceeds will be handled according to city surplus and disposal policy.
