Council advances first reading to switch EMS medical billing to EMS Management Consultants

The Board of Aldermen approved first reading of an ordinance to contract with EMS Management Consultants, Inc. for ambulance and medical billing and collection services, and staff said the change will begin in January.
A department speaker said the city has used its current third-party biller for many years but had experienced turnover, ownership changes and service issues. The new vendor, EMS Management Consultants, was presented as a widely used billing firm with a strong reputation; staff said EMS Management is offering a 5.5 percent billing fee compared with the roughly 7.5 percent the city currently pays. “They have very good reputation as biller. Their collection rates are typically higher than other companies around,” the speaker said.
The board advanced the ordinance on first reading by voice vote and directed staff to prepare the termination letter to the current vendor and to begin the January transition. Staff said the contract with the new vendor will commence in January pending contract finalization and that the council had reviewed the contract prior to the meeting.
Next steps: staff will finalize the EMS Management contract, send required notices to the outgoing vendor and bring necessary contract documents back to the council for final approval and execution.
