Council accepts $12,000 grant for EMS 'warm zone' rescue-task-force training

The Bedford Town Council on May 21 voted 6-0 to accept a $12,000 grant from the New Hampshire Department of Safety to support Warm Zone Rescue Task Force concept training for EMS personnel.
The grant will cover overtime and backfill costs so the town can send about 16 fire personnel and four law-enforcement officers to a training program run by the state fire academy; the training is scheduled to begin June 25 at the Peter Woodbury School.
Captain Tierney of the fire department told the council the program focuses on active-shooter scenarios under the Warm Zone concept and is provided to the town by the state fire academy at no charge; the grant funds will pay for staffing costs while participants are in training. "It will cover overtime and backfill costs. We have about 16 personnel, as well as 4 law enforcement that will be in this program," Captain Tierney said.
Council action: Councilor Michael Strand moved to accept the grant and authorize the town manager and fire chief to execute any necessary documentation; the motion was seconded by Councilor O'Sull (recorded in the meeting as the second). The council voted 6-0 in favor.
Why it matters: Officials said the training will raise the town’s preparedness for high-risk rescue scenarios and carries no tax impact. The acceptance authorizes the town manager and fire chief to complete any required grant paperwork and scheduling.
