County staff report facility repairs, ADA upgrades; commissioners approve disposal of surplus filing cabinets

Jeff Phelps, building maintenance, updated the Board on recent work: a gate controller installation with solar backup and remote remotes distribution; replacement of multiple parking and exercise-yard lights; repair and ductwork reconnections for several HVAC units in senior services and county offices; installation of a handrail and work toward an ADA lift at the recently acquired Redbud/Redwood building; and restroom and plumbing improvements in the detention and courthouse spaces.
Phelps told commissioners the county had amassed about 40 to 60 surplus metal filing cabinets after county offices consolidated files. "We have close to 60 of them. We only need about 20. So there's 40 of them I need to do something with," he said. Commissioners moved to make the cabinets available first to county employees and then to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. The cabinets will be staged in the courthouse basement in batches of about 10–12 and departments will be notified by memo; staff will remove inventory tags where appropriate before distribution.
Commissioners also approved sending an employee (Tanner) to a two-day HVAC certification course required under Section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act; the class cost was estimated at $1,495 and commissioners approved the travel and training expense. Phelps said certified staff will allow the county to purchase and install small HVAC condensers in-house and reduce contractor costs.
The board asked staff to continue scheduling ADA work at the acquired building and to return with cost and timeline details for roof repairs at the Kwanzaa Hut and other larger projects.
