Road and Bridge Director Eric Samberg asked the Miami County Board of Commissioners on July 30 for authorization to solicit contractor quotes to repair and reskin a salt bunker at the county maintenance yard.
Samberg told commissioners he found the structure—about 20–25 years old—has wind damage and eroded anchor points from exposure to salt. "Looking into it, it's about 20, 25 year old structure. It just needs to be maintained. We need to reskin that," Samberg said, and added that the original contractor is no longer in business.
Budget and scope
Samberg estimated repairs at about $50,000 and told commissioners that sum is in the department budget. He said the work will likely include frame repairs and replacing the fabric-like (PVC-type) skin that covers the galvanized frame; the county's plan is to solicit quotes and walk potential contractors through the nonstandard shape before getting firm bids.
Why it matters: Samberg said the backside of the bunker has been damaged for several years, allowing salt and moisture into the structure and increasing the risk of further deterioration. Commissioners agreed to place the request on the afternoon action agenda as the department's action item No. 2.
Next steps
Samberg asked to bring companies to the site for on‑site measurement and accurate quotes. The commissioners did not vote during the study session; Samberg will return with the quotes and formal procurement language for action during the afternoon agenda.
Ending
The department has funding for the work in the current budget and will proceed to solicit quotes if commissioners approve the solicitation request at the scheduled action session.
