Board of Equalization referees hear dozens of tax-value appeals; commissioners approve referee recommendations

Chaffee County staff summarized the Board of Equalization process and the referees’ work to resolve property-value appeals. Staff said the assessor’s office received hundreds of protests earlier in the season and that many were resolved through assessor outreach; approximately 57 appeals proceeded to referee hearings after withdrawals.
Tara and referees organized hearings to consider assessor valuations, protester values and referee recommendations. Staff described a higher number of changes this year compared with the prior year, attributing many adjustments to additional assessor follow-up during the appeals process. Commissioners moved to accept the referees’ recommendations and approve the record of recommendations for property-tax items; the motion passed by voice vote.
Commissioners and staff praised the referees and assessor’s office for their work. No additional appeals or changes were announced at the meeting.
