Resident urges county to comment as state land board considers Maxwell Park geothermal lease

A resident and HOA representative told commissioners that Mount Princeton Geothermal will present to the State Board of Land Commissioners on Aug. 14 and urged the county to make a public comment about Maxwell Park’s value to the community.
Karen Pate, speaking remotely during the commissioners’ public-comment period, told the board she and her homeowners association are tracking a proposed geothermal lease for Maxwell Park and that Mount Princeton Geothermal will appear before the State Board of Land Commissioners at its August 14 meeting in Alamosa. Pate said the lease is an appeal of a prior staff decision and that the company has formed a new, undisclosed partnership.
Pate said she asked the state what outcomes are possible given that the lease has expired and that she did not receive a clear answer from the State Land Board office. She urged Chaffee County to consider making a public comment at the state board meeting because, she said, “this might be our one and only chance again to go in front of the board and make comment.”
Commissioners noted they will attend a breakfast with the State Land Board on Aug. 14 and said county staff are communicating with the board about the Maxwell Park area. Commissioners also pointed to items on the county agenda related to wildfire mitigation and common-ground grants that affect the west side and east side of Maxwell Park, and asked residents to monitor those items.
The county did not take a formal vote on an official statement during the meeting; staff indicated ongoing communications with the State Land Board and other stakeholders.
