Friends group reports more than $20,000 raised for Dallas Aquatic Center repairs

Anne Hurd, president of Friends of the Dallas Aquatic Center, told the council on Jan. 26 that the nonprofit has raised more than $20,000 since launching a fundraising campaign last July and has begun paying for needed repairs and scholarships.
Hurd said the group donated $5,000 to the pool’s trust fund at the Dec. 9 meeting and another $5,000 around Christmas. She said banner-renewal revenues account for $8,050 of the total and that 25 businesses display banners at the pool. Hurd listed several near-term repair costs: an ADA exterior door repair that cost “almost $5,000,” a check valve repair estimated at about $10,000, and sand filters for which the original fundraising goal was $15,000 but current estimates for replacement are “almost $10,000.”
Hurd also said the group had partnered with Polk Resource Center and secured a $1,000 scholarship through Dallas Methodist Church supporter Helen Williams to fund swim lessons. She said certificates had been printed for the lessons and that volunteers would help ensure recipients enroll and attend classes.
Hurd closed by noting the pool is roughly 25 years old and the group continues to raise funds for maintenance and operational needs. No formal council action was requested during the public comment.
